Mexican blueberry production

Mexican blueberry production

In the last decade, Mexico has emerged as a key player in global blueberry production, showing exponential growth in acreage, yield, and export capacity. From just 4 million pounds in 2009, national production skyrocketed to 89 million pounds by 2018, positioning the country as a competitive supplier to North American markets.

Rapid Growth Driven by Investment and Climate

Between 2009 and 2018, the planted area of blueberries in Mexico grew nearly 20-fold—from under 500 acres to over 9,300 acres. This expansion has been driven by:

  • Favorable agroclimatic conditions in Central and Western Mexico
  • Foreign investment and technical transfer in genetics and postharvest handling
  • Strategic orientation toward export programs

Top Producing Regions

Today, Mexican blueberries are cultivated in at least 10 states, with the bulk of production concentrated in:

  • Jalisco – Known for advanced agronomic practices and infrastructure
  • Michoacán – High-altitude production with excellent fruit quality
  • Sinaloa – Leading in yield, reaching up to 16,059 lbs/acre in 2018

For comparison, Sinaloa’s productivity nearly quadruples that of Florida, one of Mexico’s main seasonal competitors in the U.S. market.

Strategic Seasonal Window

The Mexican blueberry season runs from September through June, peaking between February and May. This overlaps with the Florida harvest but offers supply continuity during key retail and foodservice demand periods in North America.

What This Means for Buyers

For retailers, importers, and distributors, Mexican blueberry suppliers offer a strategic mix of high-volume availability, competitive pricing, and increasing quality standards. The country is well positioned to serve program-based buyers looking to secure supply ahead of time and mitigate sourcing risks across multiple origins.
